OUR VISION

The indoor playspace was designed to be multi-functional, rendering it useful for workshops, play, art/craft, and reading.

Providing safe spaces for children to be creative, collaborative, interact, and play was an essential part of our vision for the community.

APPROACH & IDEATION

A versatile area that lent itself to an array of activities meant factoring in room for change and growth. The following were a few areas we focussed on to generate simple solutions and ideas for such a unique space.

Once these basic concepts and ideas were generated,  an inspiration/ moodboard for to define colours, patterns and textures would be created.

LAYOUT & PLANNING

DIVIDING THE SPACE BY FUNCTION

To maximise usage and get the most out of the modest space, we realised that there was a need for an activity intensive zone and a quieter reading space.

STORAGE

Games, toys, supplies, stationary and other objects for children almost always come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. The quickest solution to the challenge was to incorporate fixed shelves of staggered dimensions and low heights for easy access. Further, to make the most and divide the space we introduced basic open book shelves that could be accessed from both sides.

SEATING

The activity intensive area particularly demanded versatility. Using light-weight, easy maintenance and low set units seemed to address those requirements. The quiet reading zone on the other hand would be furnished with warmer, more comfortable seating with soft textures.

ACCENTS & DECOR

Accents around the room would include few air purifying indoor plants, visual and acoustic mobiles, kid friendly local arts and crafts, etc. These would further be defined once a moodboard with textures and colours is created.

GAMES

Apart from housing an extensive collection of internationally renowned games and books, we also focussed on incorporating a large number of locally crafted ones. This opened up the potential for collaboration with local artisans and businesses to create custom games inspired by the local context.

My engagement on the project involved primary and secondary research, driving the creative and design thinking processes, generating ideas and sketches, and identifying and reaching out to potential vendors/collaborators.
